Technically known as Condylomata acuminata, these warts often make urinating, defecation and sexual activities simply agonizing. Warts inside the throat will make swallowing painful. Therefore, those who are suffering from genital warts are often ready to undertake any genital wart treatment to get rid of them. However, you should know a little about them before taking up any treatment.

Genital warts are painful only when they are irritated by contact. If you leave them without treatment, they will enlarge and enlarged warts will naturally be exposed to other body parts more often and will cause more discomfort. Some may ulcerate. Drug interaction may cause severe side effects. However, if the doctor himself prescribes any other drug that has to be used in tandem you can do so without qualms because the doctor must be aware of the ingredient of each and will not prescribe anything that will interact to produce unwanted side effects.

Podofilox is the first line of genital wart medication due to its low cost, but the medicines included in this group cannot be used to treat genital warts inside the vagina, penis or rectum. They can however, be used to treat warts on the external skin of vagina or penis. Do not use the cream more often or for a longer period than it is being prescribed. Excessive use will not make your warts better, but will cause horrible side effects. Besides, it may not be safe for those who have allergies to medicine. Pregnant women and breast feeding mothers must let the doctor know about their condition before they can take such medicines.

You will not have much trouble if you are careful and follow the doctor’s advice to the letter and spirit. However, many people are careless and take these medicines as mere lotions and creams. They apply such medicines whenever they wish and in whatever quantity they wish and suffer violent side effects as a result. If you are pregnant or if you are breast-feeding your baby, or become pregnant during the course of the treatment, let your doctor know about it. Genital wart medication may harm the fetus and cause defect at birth. Their effect on lactation is not clear and the doctor may not want to take a chance.

If the doctor has prescribed the Podofilox lotion or gel for the genital wart treatment, then you can be sure that the genital warts will be visibly reduced within a few days. The Podofilox lotion or gel is a very powerful medication and lots of care needs to be taken when you are applying this lotion or gel. Never use the Podofilox lotion or gel for internal warts such as warts inside the vagina, anus or penis. Podofilox lotion or gel is only meant for external skin treatments.

In fact, all topical genital wart medications are for external use only and should be used very carefully. Make sure they do not enter in the eyes, mouth, nostrils by any chance. Rinse that part immediately and talk to the doctor. To avoid such accident, wash your hands after each application. As these ointments contain alcohol, keep them away from burning flame. Dispose the used tubes safely. Moreover, try to raise your immunity level, so that the warts causing viruses cannot grow by replication. As long as the HPV is in your body, the warts will keep coming back.
